The party debates leaving the caves for town given the lingering weakness to some members after the stirge attack and the lack of healing remaining. The party starts in the north east corner of the cave system. The party moves back down into the main body of the caves. The northern passage that appeared to be there turned out to be a false lead.
Vercingetorix notices a rope in a puddle and Ivellios notices a hole 60 ft up in the ceiling. The rope had been cut, only 45 ft in the puddle.
Rather than try to climb the 60' overhead tot he hole, the group investigates the large cave with the large body of water in the center. Finding nothing, the group moves back to the ogre lair looking for Kobald remains in the bone refuse pile the ogre had left. The group finds nothing of interest, other than Ivellious lying about a skull he found.
Scouting the hillside, the group finds a stream heading into the side of the mountain. Father Marcus enters the stream to scout out if it leads into a habitable part of the cave system in the mountain. The effort was unsuccessful. The party moves back into the cave and try to use the grapple to hit the hole.
After getting a rope secured the party climbs up the 60 feet to the hole.
While working on getting the dogs up to the next level the party is attacked by weird looking Kobolds, with large teeth and claws and red scale patches on their bodies, and small stocky dwarf-like creatures with bluish skin and bulging eyes.
Both Marcus and and Ivellios charge the creatures, but Marcus slips and falls. Ivellios is struck by poisoned bolts and stabbed, so he is staggered. Marcus gets up, grapples a kobold even though stabbed. Kuruk enters the fray, bull rushing through a kobold, jamming them in with the strange dwarves. The new strategy pays some dividends and Wildred also joins the cluster F- of bull-rushes and grapples. Vercingetorix ascends the rope desperately, even while the St Barnard is tied to it.
One of the weird dwarf beings manages to cast a darkness spell, and the tide of battle looks like it may turn against the party, but Vercingetorix gets into the darkness with his magic compass and dispells it.
One Kobald manages to get away, retreating into the large cave to the north and deftly skips over submerged stones to quickly get to the other side of a large underground river. The Kobald yells something as he goes. Ivellios manages to see movement on the stalagmites over the river and Kuruk, using his magical armlet, manages to hear the camouflaged creatures clinging to the rock. They are dispatched with missile fire.
Several members of the party gain an additional level and are enveloped by a strange, shimmering field for about 30 mins. When they come out all wounds are healed, all spells are renewed and new skills are theirs to command.
