Valley Campaign

The Valley Campaign represents Jeff's first stab at Gm-ing the current Fairfield County Monday night group. It ran approximately from 1999-2001, a time period which saw introduction of the 3rd Edition of Dungeons & Dragons. The group did learn the new system on the fly and implement transitioned characters.

The central theme of the setting involved an isolated Valley with limited wealth and resources in the backwater of the Flanaess, which lies so close to some sleeping evil resources. The party started out poor and adventuring, citizens of the town Amele's Notch on a large lake at the center of the Valley. Early plots exclusive of simple treasure hunts largeley centered on Lake politics and rivalry between towns. The cult of the frozen demon was vanquished as well.

In spite of this success, unbeknownst to the valley residents its locatation was across mountains to the west of the Sea of Dust. There is very close proximity to Ancient Suel structures of power. It turns out the Scarlet Brotherhood has a marked interest in this area, and sent an expeditionary force of 1,200 men and beasts to pacify the area and exploit it for all it was worth even if so far from traditional lands.

This action took place as an adjunct to the Post-Gereyhawk War era. The first interaction with Scarlet Brotherhood was at the Forgotten Temple of Tharizdun (Classic Module) with a variant thrown in with some Scarlet brothers arriving simultaneously.

A Failed Campaign?

Unusually, the DM balances a cmpaign to ensure the PC's have chance to be victorious on their main story arc. This was not to be - the characters really messed it up! First, the fabled Lighthouse of the Valley malfunctioned due to the party's failure to protect it from evil. The mighty Lamasus within were lost. Second, the great Tinker Pax was found, but then lost to the forces of evil as part of the conflict. Under the leadership of Trask the druid, the Valley's alliance confronted the Scarlet Brotherhood directly. This was an incredible failure as the Valley residents who survived enslaved at best, marginalized at worst.

However, knowledge of the evil plots of the Scarlet Brothers was disseminated to the World at large, the climax of the campaign resulting with OPEN, Billy John, and select others fleeing the Valley to the domain of Greyhawk. All of them vowed to gain vengence and help in the long-term struggle.
